Maputo will host the 25th Airports Council International, ACI Africa annual general assembly, regional conference and exhibition from the 17th to the 23rd of this, with identifying mechanisms to eliminate unnecessary connections in intercontinental flights to Africa one of the main agenda items.
“To travel inside Africa, we sometimes need to go to Europe and back,” Chairman of the Board of Mozambique Airports Emanuel Chaves reminded a press conference yesterday in Maputo – one of the biggest problems not only for passengers but also for airlines.
“Our biggest problems lie within and between African countries. This is what we will be discussing. For example, when an acquaintance of ours was participating in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries games, he had to fly from Maputo to Johannesburg, from there to Dubai, then to Lisbon and from Lisbon to Praia, Cape Verde.”
There are several contributing factors: the small number of connections between African countries, political instability, underdevelopment, the low volume of trade between countries and lack of African interest in continental tourism.
Over 300 delegates from around the world, coming together under the slogan ‘Air connectivity in Africa – the Role of Airports’, will discuss joint concerns such as security and airport economics.
