Afonso Dhlakama, president of Renamo and one of the signatories of the 1992 Mozambique General Peace Agreement, said on Wednesday that the agreement had been destroyed [“escangalhado”] during its 24 years of implementation, and that he expected Renamo and the government to reach a new agreement to end hatred and reconcile Mozambicans in the ongoing dialogue this month.
Speaking a day after the celebration of another Day of Peace on 4 October, Dhlakama, leader of the largest opposition party in Mozambique, said that the agreement had been violated and had brought more poverty to Mozambique than the 16 years of civil war.
Dhlakama however said he expected Renamo and the government to reach a new agreement this month, paving the way for Renamo governance in the six provinces where it claims victory in the 2014 elections.
