Mozambican Economy and Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane and the governor of the Bank of Mozambique Rogério Zandamela are participating in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (WB) in Washington this week.
A press statement sent to Lusa notes that the pair will take part in discussions on the global economy, highlighting themes on strengthening the financing of sustainable development, transforming and diversifying economies and financing regional infrastructure projects with transformative potential.
The issue of quotas paid by the poorest countries and an increase of their weight in IMF and World Bank decisions are among the topics that will be discussed at the annual meetings of the two bodies, which end on October 9.
“These meetings are a forum for discussion and decision-making on economic and financial matters for ministers of finance, economy and development, central bank governors, private sector executives and academics,” the press release says.
The meetings take place at a time when Mozambique and the IMF are seeking to restore confidence in their cooperation after the IMF suspended financial support following the discovery in April of more than EUR1 billion debt contracted by the former Mozambican government between 2013 and 2014 without the knowledge of parliament and international partners.
The IMF measure was followed by major international donors and aid resumption has been made conditional on the holding of an international forensic audit.
