Unknown assailants shot a prominent Mozambican jurist and political analyst, Carlos Jeque, near the Portuguese School in Maputo on Tuesday.
Few details about the attack are yet available. According to reports on social media, Jeque was treated for his injuries at the nearby Maputo Private Hospital, and is now out of danger.
Jeque was appointed chairperson of the Board of Directors of Mozambique Airlines (LAM) in June 2013, but only kept this job for a year before he was replaced by Silvestre Sechene.
Jeque ran as an independent in Mozambique’s first presidential elections in 1994, winning only 0.7 per cent of the vote, and coming ninth out of 12 candidates. He is not known to have joined any political party, but last year he announced he was supporting Renamo in the October 2014 general elections.
Later on Tuesday morning, the spokesperson for the General Command of the Mozambican police, Inacio Dina, said the police had no information on the shooting.
