On the 19th of this month, three days after the stabbing at Josina Machel Secondary School, Education Minister Jorge Ferrao said that, despite school regulations on the subject of students with “deviant behavior”, the Ministry was responsible for rehabilitating students with problems in order not to create social misfits.
“We know we have a responsibility to re-educate our children. This is the only reason why Education Ministry exists: to shape behaviour, including that of those who have deviated from the rule. They must be won back, to help avoid the creation of misfits,” the minister said.
But the final decision was contrary to these words.
Friday last, the management of the Josina Machel Secondary School decided to expel the two students on the basis of the recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry into the incident established by the Ministry of Education and Human Development.
Abdul Francisco, father of the stabbed student, said: “I am not contesting the decision, because it is supported by the rules. What saddens me as a father is that I was never called in by the management of the school regarding the disciplining of my son. And the minister himself appeared to say publicly that there would be a restrained response.”
The stabbed pupil, Santana Francisco, is still recovering and is not at school. His father is now looking for a place in a private establishment.
O País contacted the mother of the student currently incarcerated for the stabbing, but did not get a response.
