The Portuguese ambassador in Maputo, Jorge Monteiro, estimated on Tuesday that around 20 agreements will be signed during the summit between Portugal and Mozambique, scheduled for the 8th and 9th of December.
“Expectations are high, we hope that around twenty bilateral agreements will be signed in various areas, from finance, cooperation in public administration reform, digitisation, renewable energies, a range of areas of activity,” said the ambassador.
The diplomat was speaking on the sidelines of a session to present the World Bank’s portfolio of projects and public procurement procedures, promoted by the bank, at the Portuguese Embassy in Maputo and the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP), where, he said, the overall figure of projects and deals that could be concluded during the Portuguese-Mozambican summit, taking place in Portugal, is still being assessed.
“We also believe that new instruments to support the financing of the Mozambican economy will be discussed. We have high expectations that the conditions will be created to relaunch the bilateral relationship in the economic field and in the broader cooperation we maintain in Mozambique,” said the ambassador.
According to Jorge Monteiro, it is also expected that Mozambican companies will begin to invest in the European country, alongside the Portuguese private sector, which has around 500 companies in Mozambique.
On the sidelines of the summit, he said, there will be a Business Forum between Mozambique and Portuguese companies, with the aim of publicising the opportunities that currently exist in both markets.
“We want to go further for two fundamental reasons: Portuguese companies are familiar with the Mozambican reality, speak the same language and have known about the Mozambican reality for many years. Our presence here is not temporary or short-lived, it is a long-term commitment,” said Jorge Monteiro.
On 30 October, the Portuguese ambassador in Maputo highlighted to Lusa the “very strong and intense relationship” with Mozambique, expecting to see a “good number” of bilateral agreements signed at the bilateral summit in December.
“We have a very strong, very dynamic relationship with Mozambique. We are countries that share a past, we share a history, but we also share a present and a future, and it is a very intense relationship at all levels, because we have a strong Portuguese community here, which has been here for many years,” said the ambassador on that day.
On 3 July, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced that the Portuguese-Mozambican summit would be held on 8th and 9th December in Portugal, arguing that the two countries have leaders at the beginning of their terms who are capable of breathing new life into cooperation.
During the fifth Mozambique-Portugal summit, held in September 2022 in Maputo, 18 agreements and memoranda were signed between the two governments, covering areas such as institutional capacity building in the sectors of agriculture, education, justice, health, heritage and culture, the Portuguese School of Mozambique, the promotion of the Portuguese language, and financing for businesses and job creation in Cabo Delgado, a province in the north of the country that has been the scene of terrorist attacks.
