The Southern Regional Water Administration (ARA-Sul) warns of a moderate risk of flooding along the Maputo River, namely in the Matutuíne district of Maputo province, due to the gradual increase in discharges from the Pongolapoort (Jozini) Dam in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
According to ARA-Sul, the localities of Madubula and Catuane will be the most affected by the discharges, with forecasts of flooding in agricultural areas and disruption to some access roads to the district headquarters of Matutuíne, Bela Vista.
Discharges from the Pongolapoort Dam began yesterday and are expected to peak on 3 November, as part of preventive management measures for the 2025/26 rainy season.
A significant rise in water levels, potentially exceeding the alert level, is expected at the Madubula hydrometric station until 8 November.
ARA-Sul has assured that a team has already been deployed to the Maputo River, tasked with monitoring the evolution of possible water flows.
To prevent potential damage, the agency urges communities to move their belongings and avoid crossing the river, so as not to be swept away by the force of the water. ARA-Sul guarantees that the situation is expected to return to normal by 11 November.
