The China–Portuguese-speaking Countries Economic and Trade Expo (C-PLPEX) kicks off on Wednesday in Macau, featuring 320 Lusophone exhibitors and, in a sporting touch, the display of the iconic jersey worn by Pelé at the 1962 World Cup.
At the second edition of C-PLPEX, Deep Robotics, a Chinese innovation company founded in 2017, will showcase two robot dogs. These are “very mature products” that can, for example, be deployed to assess conditions in fire scenarios, a representative of BPS Global Group — Deep Robotics’ agent in Australia, Hong Kong and Macau — told reporters.
With its participation in C-PLPEX, Wong noted, the company’s “priority is Macau,” though doors may open to other markets. “We need to know whether Portuguese-speaking countries are interested and whether the parent company has any plans for expansion, and to which Portuguese-speaking countries,” he added, during a media tour of the fair venue, which runs until Saturday.
Deep Robotics will occupy one of nearly 500 booths from China and Portuguese-speaking countries present this year at C-PLPEX. Of these, 320 are from Lusophone markets, representing “a 23% increase compared with the first edition,” the president of Macau’s Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) announced at a press conference today.
“One third are from Brazil, one third from Portugal, and the remainder from other Portuguese-speaking countries,” added Che Weng Keong.
The stands, Che said, focus on “priority areas of Sino–Lusophone cooperation,” such as “cross-border e-commerce, new energy, the agricultural industry, food and beverages, professional services and the blue economy.”
Running in parallel for the first time this year will be the China–Portuguese-speaking Countries International Agricultural Expo. Brazil, the IPIM head said, weighed on the decision to launch this new showcase.
“Brazil is a very large country, linked to food and agricultural production, and with that in mind we decided to hold this exhibition. In inland China, this [agricultural] area is very advanced and can have a strong relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries,” the IPIM president further explained.
Alan Ho, C-PLPEX coordinator, also noted that bringing “many people” from the Lusophone world and mainland China to Macau is “crucial to promoting Macau’s platform role.”
China established the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) as a platform to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries in 2003 and, in the same year, created the Forum Macao. The body includes, in addition to China, the nine Portuguese-speaking countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste and, since 2022, Equatorial Guinea.
As a “sporting and cultural” highlight of this year’s fair, Ho added, “for the first time in Macau, the yellow number 10 jersey worn by Pelé in 1962” during the World Cup will be on display.
The second edition of C-PLPEX will be held concurrently with the 30th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) and the 2025 Macao Franchise Expo. Together, the three events cover nearly 30,000 square metres and bring together more than 1,100 exhibitors.
IPIM has invited Guangzhou (Canton), capital of the neighbouring province, as MIF’s partner city and will organise more than 50 economic and trade promotion sessions, including regional cooperation forums and conferences.
“Several renowned companies have already confirmed commercial partnerships to be formalised during the three events, with important contracts expected to be signed (…) with the aim of accelerating the development of sectors such as big health and technology,” the IPIM president noted, citing the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca as an example.
Portuguese companies Prio Energy and the Port of Sines will also be represented in Macau, it was announced.
