Three thousand residents of Madubula, Zicale, Machucha and Malachote, in the administrative post of Catuane, Matutuíne district, Maputo province, may become isolated at the end of this month due to a possible rise in the water level of the river basin.
This situation could be caused by the overflow of the Maputo River, resulting from the planned releases from the Pongolapoort Dam in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The dam, built on the Pongola River – a tributary that flows into the Maputo River in Mozambique – is currently above 90% of its storage capacity.
In a statement cited by Rádio Moçambique (RM), the Pongolapoort Dam authorities announced that controlled discharges are scheduled for the end of this month, as part of efforts to relieve pressure on the infrastructure.
Ernesto Tivane, a technician from ARA-Sul, has called for precautionary measures to be taken in view of a situation that may not only lead to the flooding of agricultural fields but could also affect road access.
