Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Monday called for “the consolidation of peace, reconciliation and social transformation”.
He was speaking at the opening of the Eighth National Religious Conference, a gathering of leaders of various religious denominations which, according to a release from Chapo’s office, is intended “to strengthen the role of religions in the construction of a united and prosperous country”.
The Conference is being held under the slogan “Mozambique First – Each Mozambican as a Messenger of Transformation, Reconciliation and Peace”, and Chapo stressed that the interests of the country must come before any other interests.
He declared that the Conference is “a sacred space for dialogue and reflection among Mozambicans”. He said he was addressing the conference, not merely as President, but “as a servant of the same motherland, a child of the same land, united by the common desire to see Mozambique prosper in peace, harmony and communion between Mozambican brothers”.
He recognised that the country still faces challenges of poverty, inequality and foci of armed violence, but stressed the capacity for resilience of the Mozambican people.
“We are the people who, out of the mud of war, have known how to sow the fragile and precious germ of peace. We are the people who have repeatedly chosen the table of dialogue rather than confrontation on the battlefield”.
“The destiny of our nation is not just in the hands of rulers, politicians or soldiers”, he said. “It is in the hands of all Mozambicans”.
Reconciliation “does not mean forgetting the past”, added Chapo, “but choosing not to be hostage to it”.
