The Sant’ Egídio Community in Mozambique will hold nationwide interfaith meetings on Saturday, 4 October, to mark the 33rd anniversary of the signing of the General Peace Agreement (GPA). The date is also referred to in Mozambique as the Day of Peace.
The initiative aims to celebrate one of the fundamental moments in the country’s history, recognising that prayer is the foundation of peace and that all religions can contribute to its construction.
In Maputo City, the meeting will take place in front of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception.
It should be recalled that the Sant’ Egídio Community, based in Italy, played an important role in the talks between the Government and Renamo, which culminated in the signing of the General Peace Agreement in Rome on 4 October 1992, ending the 16-year war in Mozambique.
Meanwhile this Friday, the Italian Embassy is promoting a concert at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception, starting at 7:00 p.m. The event also seeks to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Mozambique.
Music will serve as the bridge between history and the future, in a concert featuring both classical and contemporary repertoires, with the participation of renowned artists from Italy and Mozambique. Among them will be the voices of Stella Mendonça and Sónia Mocumbi, and the melodies performed by Damiano Lazzaron (piano), Stefano Pagliari (violin), and Luis Lanzarini (saxophone).
