Ten people were rescued and at least four people were killed when the Inhambane-Maxixe boat they were travelling in capsized yesterday. The apparently overcrowded boat was preparing to dock at Maxixe jetty when it was caught by a strong gust of wind and overturned.
About 20 further individuals are reported missing.
The Inhambane maritime authorities have not yet ascertained the exact number of people travelling on the vessel but it is known that most were public servants and students returning from the provincial capital at the end of the day.
Reports indicate that the Teresa, with a capacity of 35 people including crew, had more than 40 people on board. Of the ten rescued, two are in a serious condition.
Inhambane Maritime Administrator Américo Sitói promised to comment on the incident this morning after gathering the necessary information about the probable cause, number of confirmed victims, people missing and patients in hospital.
