Power utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announced yesterday that approximately 286,000 homes were without power in the provinces of Zambézia and Niassa, in central and northern Mozambique, due to a breakdown in the high-voltage grid.
EDM spokesperson António Nhassengo explained that the major breakdown occurred on Tuesday night at the substation in Gúruè district, Zambézia province, in the centre of the country, causing a power outage along the stretch between the districts of Gúruè and Cuamba, in the northern province of Niassa.
“Due to the breakdown in the 110-kilovolt transmission line, and considering that from Cuamba onwards we have additional substations fed by this stretch, the Lichinga and Marrupa substations in Niassa were also left without power,” Nhassengo said.
According to the EDM spokesperson, the issue resulted in power outages for approximately 286,000 customers in the two provinces, with Niassa being the most affected.
While infrastructure restoration efforts are underway, power will remain restricted, Nhassengo added.
“The Gúruè-Cuamba line passes through a dense and difficult-to-access region. Our colleagues continue to work to identify the cause of the breakdown, as power cannot be restored until the source of the issue is identified to prevent damage to the equipment,” he said.
Electricidade de Moçambique also noted that, on the same day, another breakdown left approximately 25,000 homes without electricity in the southern city of Maputo.
