The Municipal Sanitation and Drainage Company (EMSD) has announced that the replacement of drainage box covers on several roads in Maputo will begin this Monday (29), starting with the main avenues and busiest areas.
The initiative follows the theft of 193 drainage box covers across the city — a practice that has raised serious concerns for the municipality.
A survey conducted by EMSD reveals that the absence of these covers has caused major disruptions to vehicle traffic and significantly increased the risk of accidents for residents.
A statement from EMSD, seen by AIM, indicates that the total cost of replacing all the missing covers exceeds five million meticais (approximately US$78,000), with each unit costing 27,000 meticais.
“This unexpected expense places great pressure on the company’s resources, which has compromised its ability to respond immediately,” the statement reads.
To mitigate the impact, EMSD also announced that, in this first phase, 30 new covers will be installed. The continuation of operations will depend on improvements to the company’s financial capacity.
The city council has called for an end to the systematic thefts and urged residents to report acts of vandalism, which not only incur high costs but also pose serious risks to public safety.
