Mozambique marked a major milestone in its tourism industry yesterday as President Daniel Chapo launched the Aman Group’s first resort in Sub-Saharan Africa. Located in Gaza Province, the Karingani & Pomene project represents a landmark partnership between the luxury hospitality brand and the Karingani Game Reserve.
“This is a historic moment in the evolution of tourism in Mozambique,” said President Chapo. “The Aman Group’s decision to launch its first Sub-Saharan venture here places our nation firmly on the global tourism map and has already created over 300 jobs.”
The Aman Group—formerly Aman Resorts—is a Swiss-headquartered multinational luxury hospitality company founded in 1988 by Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha. Known for its exclusive, high-end retreats, Aman operates more than 38 properties across over 20 countries, including Thailand, Japan, Morocco, and the United States.
Chapo hailed the investment as a “transformative” step for Mozambique’s tourism sector, underscoring the confidence international investors now place in the country.
“To be chosen over countless global destinations is a clear signal: Mozambique is a land of opportunity and a secure, welcoming environment for world-class investment,” he said. “Establishing Aman’s first Sub-Saharan resort here elevates our country as one of the world’s most exclusive destinations for discerning travellers.”
President Chapo also emphasized Aman’s commitment to working in sensitive regions and partnering with local communities—a model that goes beyond luxury tourism.
“This project isn’t just about resorts or elite travel—it’s about legacy and inclusion,” Chapo stated. “Alongside the 300+ employees already hired, the initiative has created over 400 jobs, installed six water supply systems, built sanitation infrastructure, distributed agricultural equipment, and provided training in hospitality and wildlife management to 23 young people from nearby communities, who studied in South Africa.”
The President concluded with a call to action, inviting both domestic and international investors, as well as local communities, to embrace what he described as a “historic opportunity” to contribute to Mozambique’s economic independence and drive inclusive, sustainable development.
