The chairperson of the Board of Directors of Mozambique Airlines (LAM), Agostinho Langa Junior, has claimed that the restructuring of the company, which began four months ago, is showing positive results.
Speaking at a Maputo press conference on Monday, Langa said “we have grown financially in terms of revenue, from about nine million dollars a month to 12 million dollars a month”.
“Our assessment of these first four months is positive”, he said. “We think we are on the right path”. The improved finances “mean that we feel comfortable to take some decisions”.
The improvement, Langa added, was because the company was now able to honour its agreements with the owners of the planes LAM has leased. “There were many complaints about the operational instability of LAM”, he admitted, “but we think we have achieved some improvements, thanks to honouring on time our commitments to the owners of the planes. As you know, LAM is operating with five aircraft, four of which are leased”.
Although the company is still burdened with foreign and domestic debts, said Langa, the management is confident that the company’s financial health is improving. “Several bodies have expressed an interest in collaborating with LAM, something that did not happen in the past”, he added. Langa did not name these bodies.
Langa admitted that failure to pay the leases on time often forced an interruption in LAM operations. He claimed this is no longer happening and “we are beginning to have financial results that allow us to cover the daily operations of LAM”.
He stressed that efforts are under way to ensure that LAM can acquire a further six aircraft by the second half of December.
Langa stressed that the company is committed to internal discipline. “We are attentive to the day-to-day challenges and difficulties”, he said. “If we find that somebody is not aligned with us, we shall have no problem, depending on the seriousness of the case, to open disciplinary proceedings, rescind contracts, or remove people from positions of responsibility”.
