A Mozambican citizen known by the nickname “Dólar” says that SERNIC mistakenly used his photo in association with a man killed in South Africa this week for alleged involvement in kidnappings.
Contacted by “O País”, SERNIC did not offer any comment on the case, but removed the photo, originally used to help identify the deceased individual, from its official website.
In a video circulating on social media, the man claims that the National Criminal Investigation Service mistook him for an alleged kidnapper murdered by South African authorities last Wednesday, and that he had alerted the National Criminal Investigation Service about the situation as soon as he learned that the man was wanted.
The use of the photograph caused embarrassment to Dólar’s family and friends.
The young man, who says he is a dancer and goes by the stage name of ‘Dólar?, adds that the confusion began last year, when his image began to be associated with criminal activity on social media.
His likeness was posted in the “Wanted” section of SERNIC’s official website, identifying him as António Francisco Macamo, also known as “Dollar Man” or “Dollarman”.
Days after the murder of Macamo, the photograph was removed from SERNIC’s official platform, but without any public clarification. Currently, the “Wanted” section is “being updated”.

For legal expert Paulino Cossa, there was a clear violation of the right to a good name and warned of the serious legal consequences of this type of error.
Furthermore, the legal expert states that citizens can sue the state for violations of fundamental rights, including the right to image and good name.
“O País” endeavoured to contact SERNIC in order to discuss the matter, but without success.
