Farmácias de Moçambique (FARMAC) plans to introduce digital pharmacies starting in October, in line with its efforts to improve access to pharmaceutical services for communities.
Digital pharmacies will allow the public to use digital technology to order, pay for, and receive their medications at home, providing greater convenience and flexibility in service provision, said FARMAC CEO Gustavo da Cruz yesterday at a conference organized as part of the 60th edition of FACIM in Marracuene.
Da Cruz highlighted the benefits the service will bring, especially in terms of bringing pharmacies closer to citizens and expanding access to a safe, quality service at prices he considers fair.
In the ensuing debate, issues were raised such as the need to protect users, considering the likely risk of an increase in self-medication.
Related issues such as the need to prevent fraud were also raised, with strict oversight involving all pharmaceutical and health authorities.
João Grachane, of the National Medicines Authority ANARME, then observed that self-medication accounts for approximately 40% to 60% of problems related to medication use.
Grachane therefore urged increased public education on medication use and strict compliance with regulations governing the sale of medications.
Online medication sales should therefore be conducted through licensed pharmacies to ensure the necessary oversight, Grachane said.
