Malawian citizens are illegally occupying a one-kilometre area of Mozambican territory in the border region of Chala, in Chimbunila district, Niassa province, and building homes there.
The Malawians in question have settled and established residences and social and economic infrastructure under an alleged agreement with a former district administrator.
The Secretary of State in Niassa, Silva Livone, says he is awaiting instructions from the central government on how to resolve the issue, as it is not the responsibility of district administrators to make decisions concerning state sovereignty.
The Secretary of State in Niassa, Silva Livone, admitted that a similar situation obtains along the border with the United Republic of Tanzania in Chiwindi, Lago district, albeit to a lesser extent.
