The Mozambican Police (PRM) have detained 10 Chinese nationals in possession of 22 firearms in Lupiliche village, Lago district, in the northern province of Niassa.
This region has been attracting many foreigners in recent years because of its known deposits of gold.
According to Nelson de Sousa, the police spokesperson in Niassa, who was speaking to reporters on Tuesday, among the seized firearms, there were shotguns, pistols and 103 rounds of ammunition.
The detainees have already been taken to the Provincial Immigration Service for verification of their legal status in the country”, he said. “They were detained during a quick visit by Secretary of State Silva Livone to the Lupiliche mines”.
During the operation, the police also recovered five handcuffs, three vehicles, eight cell phones and three truncheons.
“The multisectoral team is working to determine the real motivations that would have led them to have these materials in their possession”, Sousa said.
