Mozambique’s Attorney-General, Américo Letela, believes that human behaviour is the main factor responsible for the destruction of the coastline in the southern province of Inhambane.
According to Latela, who was speaking to reporters on Sunday during his visit to Barra beach in Inhambane, in addition to the effects of climate change, human behaviour is responsible for the destruction of marine ecosystems.
He explained that there are many infrastructures built in areas prohibited by law, which means that the ecosystem “is being destroyed by those who want to favour their personal gains.”
“Construction should be avoided in areas that are legally prohibited, such as environmental protection areas. Nature is nature. When we invade its area, we will have great difficulty in containing it and, above all, to avoid certain situations that we are witnessing here”, he said.
“We must respect our environmental legislation. We, as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, will do everything in our power, together with other entities, to strengthen coastal surveillance in order to prevent due to human action”, he added.
