The building currently housing Chibuto Rural Hospital was built during the colonial period, around 1920-1921, perhaps even with forced labour. Today, one hundred years later, it poses a genuine danger to both staff and patients.
With no alternative on offer, the more than 22,000 district residents seek hope of medical care in the dilapidated century-old building, with its crumbling walls and scars of leaks to further alarm the patients.
The district government has already launched several calls for major renovations to the hospital structure to provide a minimum of dignity to those seeking health services.
Chibuto district administrator Cacilda Banze recently (August 11) found another opportunity to renew the plea for renovations, bringing the problem to the attention of Frelimo deputies representing the Gaza constituency in the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic.
The hospital is currently operating in improvised facilities well below the minimum standards recommended for health services.
According to District Health Director José Morona, the maternity ward, for example, operates outside the hospital grounds, 800 metres from the main hospital, posing difficulties in cases requiring emergency surgical intervention.
The Frelimo deputies, led by Alberto Valói, welcomed the concern and promised, as representatives of the people, to reach the appropriate authorities and resolve the problem as a matter of urgency, saving the people of Chibuto from the collapsing ruin.
The health sector in Chibuto district currently has 21 health units and 388 employees, including doctors, nurses and orderlies, who provide care for over 22,000 people.
