The National Maritime Institute (INAMAR) recently hosted a technical meeting with the National Mining Institute (INAMI) to strengthen collaboration in controlling the export of mineral products, particularly regarding the inspection and verification of the legality of exported volumes.
The meeting follows concerns raised by INAMI regarding significant inconsistencies between the quantities of minerals declared in production reports by mining operators and the amounts declared for tax purposes.
In the meeting on August 5, INAMI highlighted the need for joint work with INAMAR, given that many mining operators use national ports to export their products.
INAMR and INAMI agreed on the importance of creating an institutional collaboration channel to foster greater transparency and control over the export of minerals, particularly heavy sands, graphite, and coal.
According to Zaquir Issufo, director of INAMI’s Mining Registration and Licensing Service, it is critical to ensure that the declared amounts are reliable and consistent with reality, in order to prevent tax evasion and guarantee the protection of the public interest and state resources.
The meeting also discussed the alignment of technical and administrative procedures to strengthen joint oversight in the mineral resource export process.
INAMAR and INAMI committed to continuing coordination to ensure more sustainable and transparent exploitation and export in the Mozambican mining sector.
