Herds of elephants are destroying crops in production fields and granaries in Lunho administrative post, Lago district, Niassa.
In the last ten days alone, the elephants have destroyed 12 corn granaries and laid waste to seven hectares of rice and five hectares of banana trees in the communities of Micuela and Tulo Cambona.
The chief of Lunho administrative post, Macabeu Momade, warns that the situation could lead to pockets of hunger, and that efforts were underway to allocate food supplies to assist those affected.
Macabeu Momade also lamented the lack of equipment to scare away the elephants.
