The Mozambican Police (PRM) on Thursday detained a man in possession of 190 grenades in Changara district, in the central province of Tete.
According to Police spokesperson Feliciano da Câmara, who was speaking to reporters, the grenades, with their respective detonators, were being transported in a mini-bus, without a license and in a dangerous condition for human lives.
He explained that the man arrested is the mini-bus fare collector. The driver fled when he was being questioned by the police, “but efforts are underway to capture him and identify the owner of the grenades.”
“We believe these are detonation devices used in mining, and they are also devices that can be used for other illegal activities, which could jeopardize normal order and public safety”, the spokesperson said.
According to Da Câmara, the inspection that took place as part of a roadblock in Tete city found out that the explosive material was from neighbouring Zambia.
