Mozambican authorities confirmed yesterday that the waters of the Limpopo River, which flows through four African countries, pose no risk to human health, although they recommended treatment before consumption.
“After laboratory tests in Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, there is no confirmation of toxic contamination in the waters of the Limpopo River,” stated a joint statement from the Regional Water Administration of the South (ARA-Sul) and the National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH), released on Wednesday.
The issue at hand is ARA-Sul’s warning on the 21st of July about a possible contamination of the Limpopo River, which was exhibiting a greenish colour, an effect also reported in the countries that share the river.
According to the document, “there is currently no scientific confirmation of toxic contamination of the Limpopo River waters, and laboratory analyses do not indicate a risk to human health”.
However, “DNGRH and ARA-Sul recommend the use of Limpopo River water for public supply, observing all treatment methods before consumption,” the statement adds.
The Mozambican authorities further reaffirmed their commitment to monitoring the situation “with transparency, protecting public health, and the sustainable management of water resources”, affirming that any new scientifically validated information will be “shared with the public and the competent authorities”.
