The Pemba City Council hosted a meeting with the candidates for the Miss Kissambi 2025 pageant on July 26, 2025, officially kicking off the preparatory activities for one of the most significant cultural and tourism events on the municipal calendar, reads a communique issued by the city council.
According to the same source, the meeting aimed to welcome and guide the 20 young women who will compete for the title of ambassador of beauty, culture, and tourism for Pemba Bay. The initiative is part of the Kissambi Festival – 2nd Edition, within the scope of the Pemba Yethu municipal program, which aims to promote the cultural and tourism potential of the third largest bay in the world and the largest in Africa.
Miss Kissambi is more than a beauty pageant. It is a platform for valuing local identity, feminine elegance, and the empowerment of young women from Pemba, transforming them into agents of community development. The event features fashion shows featuring costumes inspired by the Macua, Maconde, and Muani traditions, with an emphasis on the use of capulanas [a type of wax print fabric, of which the kissambi is one variety] and local materials produced by designers and artisans from Cabo Delgado.
The official gala presentation of the candidates is scheduled for October 4th, with a vibrant spectacle that will include fashion shows, live music, a cultural auction, and the presentation of the 14 finalists. The grand finale of the competition will take place on October 18th, during the Pemba City Day celebrations, with the crowning of the three winners, who will receive an equal number of prizes.
The jury, composed of renowned figures from the fields of culture, fashion, and entrepreneurship, will be responsible for evaluating the candidates based on criteria such as: fashion shows (presentation, traditional, and formal attire), cultural knowledge (with themes such as tourism, kissambi, and social projects), charisma, and representation.
During the meeting with the Miss contestants, Shaquila Alberto, Councillor for Culture and Tourism, encouraged the contestants to responsibly embrace this mission, becoming symbols of the city’s active youth and cultural richness.
With this gesture, the city reaffirms its commitment to promoting culture, tourism, and youth as pillars for the sustainable development of the city of Pemba.
Also present at the same meeting was renowned artist Az Khinera, Festival Ambassador and Miss Kissambi 2025.
