Mozambican Prime Minister Benvinda Levi has challenged the government communicators to strengthen their strategies for public communication, taking into account that they are the link between the government and the public.
According to Levi, who was speaking on Wednesday at the opening of a meeting of the Coordinating Council of the government Information Office (GABINFO), which is taking place simultaneously with the Government Communicators’ Forum, in the resort of Chidenguele, in the southern province of Gaza, the Government Communicator must be someone who anticipates the situations in which Government members will be called upon to interact.
“He must also be someone who brings the necessary tools to ensure that communication is positive for publicizing the achievements of his department and, consequently, improving the Government’s image”, she said.
The Prime Minister recalled that communication requires clear planning, aligned with institutional objectives and the Government’s Five-Year Plan. Communicators should also strengthen the credibility of public communication.
“Communicators must use accessible channels and rapid responses, strengthening internal communication, acting before a crisis and promoting communication for peace, cohesion, and development, especially in sensitive contexts”, she said.
Levi also claimed that public communication is a strategic function, through which citizens are informed and mobilised.
“The Government Communicator is a strategic agent, not just a technician, but a mediator between the Government’s vision and the voice of the citizen”, the Prime Minister said. “We need more coordination and coherence. The multiplicity of voices speaking on behalf of the Government must converge into a clear and aligned message. In this regard, GABINFO must ensure that the Government’s communication is consistent”.
“Citizens’ trust in public institutions is largely based on the State’s ability to communicate clearly, act proactively with transparency, and remain close to the real needs of the population”, she added.
