The 32 Mozambicans who were victims of labour exploitation in the Republic of Laos are awaiting repatriation to Mozambique, Deputy Attorney General of the Republic of Mozambique, Amabélia Chuquela, has said.
The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office affirms that everything is being done to bring back home the 32 Mozambican citizens who, in two groups, were tricked into travelling to Laos for forced labour between November 2024 and March of this year.
Chuquela explained the situation, saying: “We are aware that Mozambican citizens were also involved, and everything is being done to identify these individuals who not only enticed but also recruited them.”
Meanwhile, the Head of Mission of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, António de Vivo, has warned of the vulnerability of those displaced by terrorist attacks to human trafficking.
“These communities face a structural vulnerability that is extremely fertile ground for trafficking networks,” António de Vivo stressed.
Many of those displaced by the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado have taken refuge in the provinces of Nampula and Niassa in northern Mozambique.
