Sérgio Cipriano, Administrator of Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, has announced that a man who used to be a member of the islamist terrorist group has handed himself over to the local authorities, claiming to have no intention of returning to the bush to carry out further violence against local residents.
Cipriano told reporters on Tuesday that this individual, along with his wife, claimed to have joined the terrorists in 2020 in Mocímboa da Praia town.
“The man was well received, and he is being held in the custody of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS), who have been instructed to maintain a good relationship with him, pending his social reintegration”, he said.
The administrator explained that the man and his six weeks pregnant wife had health problems. They were both taken to a local health facility where they received medical attention.
“The couple handed over an AK-47 firearm, four magazines with ammunition, a grenade and military uniforms in their possession. The couple will be reintegrated into society and will be able to resume the fishing activities they carried out before joining the terrorist group”, Cipriano said.
The administrator also revealed that recently three hundred terrorists, including adults, young people and children, have turned themselves in to the authorities in Mocímboa da Praia. However, he did not specify the period in which these people surrendered.
