Mozambique: Contractor abandons morgue in Gaza

The Mozambican health authorities have revealed that the building contractor hired to rehabilitate the morgue at Chicumbane Rural Hospital, in Limpopo district, in the southern province of Gaza, has abandoned the work and disappeared.
According to Sérgio João, representative of the Gaza Provincial Directorate of Health, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, the contractor hired to rehabilitate the morgue, which has been out of use for four years, “received the money and disappeared.”
However, Joao did not mention the name of the contractor or the amount of money stolen.
“The company responsible received the money and disappeared. But work is underway to install a morgue in the Mauawasse health center within two weeks in order to alleviate the suffering of the over 100 thousand inhabitants living in the area”, reads the “O Pais” article.
Because the morgue at the Chicumbane Rural Hospital is out of order, households are forced to keep the bodies of their loved ones at home or to travel almost 25 kilometres to take the bodies to the hospital in the provincial capital, Xai-Xai.
