The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) have arrested six men in a case of alleged human trafficking in the central province of Manica.
The individuals, four Chinese nationals and two Mozambicans, allegedly trafficked and sexually abused a Vietnamese citizen seduced with the promise of employment in Manica province.
During the arrest, police found firearms, a computer, cell phones, and an unspecified amount of cash.
PRM spokesperson Mouzinho Manasse explained that the six individuals were neutralized a few days ago as a result of investigative work conducted by the police and other institutions.
“They invited the citizen to travel to Mozambique with the promise of a job. When she arrived in the country, she was held captive and sexually abused. We received complaints and began an investigation that culminated in the arrest of the six citizens,” he said.
According to Manasse, the Mozambicans detained were found in the company of the four Chinese nationals.
“We still don’t know the extent of the two Mozambicans’ involvement in this crime. But what we can say is that they were with the Chinese nationals at the time of their arrest. Work is currently underway to determine the extent of each of the suspects’ involvement in the crime,” he added.
He also said that the weapons would be taken for ballistics testing to obtain more information about the details of this crime.
“The Vietnamese citizen is under police protection. At the appropriate time, we will provide more details about this crime. We intend to determine whether this is a network involving more citizens,” Manasse explained.
A few days ago, the PRM dismantled a network of embezzlement and sale of medications from the National Health System (SNS) in the city of Chimoio.
The group consisted of five citizens, including two agents assigned to the medication warehouse and three employees of a security company.
The medication was delivered to dealers who sold it on the black market in the city of Chimoio and other districts of Manica province.
Thefts from the warehouses were carried out at night, with the complicity of security guards. Lights were turned off to prevent security cameras from capturing images, after which boxes were loaded into vehicles and driven away.
The five detainees are currently awaiting legal proceedings prior to being brought to justice to be held accountable for their crimes.
