Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has described the publicly-owned Ports and Rail Company (CFM) as the backbone of the national economy because it is responsible for connecting the country towards sustainable development.
According to the President, who was speaking on Tuesday, in Maputo, during the ceremony marking the 130th anniversary of the founding of CFM, Mozambican towns and cities sprang up around railway stations and developed over time, partly thanks to the services provided by CFM.
“Many of our towns were born around railway stations. Many villages came to life thanks to water, electricity, and schools provided by CFM”, he said.
He recalled that 130 years ago, on July 8, 1895, the rail link between Lourenço Marques (today’s Maputo) and the South African city of Pretoria, was inaugurated.
“What could have been just a colonial enterprise has become, in the hands and sweat of Mozambicans, from the Rovuma to the Maputo (the rivers marking the northern and southern boundaries of the country), a powerful instrument for territorial cohesion, economic and social development, the creation of citizenship and national affirmation”, said Chapo. “That is why, in today’s celebrations, we are not just commemorating a simple historical date, but rather we are celebrating our capacity to resist, to transform, to dream and to make the future”.
