Today, July 7, 2025, starts a two-day visit by German Ambassador Ronald Münch to the city of Beira, Sofala province. “Our relations with Mozambique are diverse and cover the whole country. The aim of this trip is to take part in two important events in the areas of climate protection and culture, organized together with our partners in Beira. In addition, vocational training will be at the heart of the agenda – an essential theme of our cooperation with Mozambique,” said the Ambassador on the eve of the trip.
On the first day, the Ambassador will hold official and courtesy meetings with the Secretary of State in the Province, Cecília Chamutota, the Provincial Governor, Lourenço Bulha, and the Mayor of the City of Beira, Albano Carige.
The city of Beira is one of the municipalities most affected by climate change. German cooperation supports the municipality, as well as other municipalities in the province, in strengthening their capacities, with the aim of making local governance more prepared and infrastructures more resilient. In this context, the Climate Talk – for the first-time outside Maputo – will bring together local actors, international partners and representatives of civil society in the city of Beira. Together, they will reflect on how to make communities more resilient to the effects of climate change.
German cooperation in the province aims to provide opportunities for young people through vocational training, the financing of modern infrastructure and exchanges.
On the second day of the visit, July 8, visits are planned to local private sector institutions and to the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Beira (IICB), a school that teaches German language classes under the PASCH initiative. This year, for the third time in a row, IICB students are scheduled to travel to Germany for a three-year vocational training course.
The visit will end with a cultural event at the Casa do Artista. The writer Francisca Raposo will read extracts from her book “From Mozambique to the GDR”. In the 1980s, Francisca was one of around 900 Mozambican children who attended the “Friendship School” in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). At the reading, Francisca will share her personal story – a moving testimony to the shared history between Mozambique and Germany.
