Armindo Nkutche, the Renamo district delegate for Moatize and member of Tete provincial assembly of was shot dead in the street on Thursday 22 September moments after speaking at the assembly’s closing session.
Renamo has attributed the action to “death squads”.
Speaking to VOA, Felix Quembo, Renamo provincial political delegate in Tete, said that the victim, who headed the commission for the civil service and local authorities in the provincial assembly, was shot six times on the pavement of one of Moatize’s busiest streets.
“After he left the assembly, he traveled by minibus and got out close to a restaurant and was walking along when he was attacked by a death squad and peppered with bullets,” Quembo said. The car, he added, had tinted windows and no registration plates.
According to the same source, the victim still showing signs of life after the first five shots, his attackers reversed the vehicle and fired the sixth, fatal shot into his head.
Quembo also revealed that on the night of Wednesday 21 September, Nkutche’s dwelling was ransacked, and, “since he lived in a place that only he knew about, they could not stop him”.
The Renamo delegate suspected that during the three-day provincial assembly session, the assassins would have been following him in order to plan his murder.
Instability has marked the last few months in the central region of Mozambique, with clashes reported between the armed wing of Renamo and the Defence and Security Forces, as well as mutual allegations of abductions and assassinations of political leaders on both sides.
