Mozambique has joined the Mission 300 Initiative, which is ambitious programme aimed at boosting the electrification of sub-Saharan Africa and guaranteeing access to electricity for 300 million people by 2030.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, during the Annual Meeting of the Energy Sector Working Group, which was held last week in Maputo.

According to the Minister, the government and its cooperation partners must be committed to the strategic objectives for the energy sector in Mozambique so that the goals of the Mission 300 Initiative may be achieved.
“There were results of joint work between the government and its partners. The electricity access rate in Mozambique has increased from 30 per cent in 2018 to 61 per cent in 2023, with a record of more than 500,000 new connections achieved in a single year, 70 per cent through the national grid and 30 per cent through off-grid solutions”, he said.
The minister explained that the government’s partners were crucial on several fronts, namely in promoting clean cooking solutions through climate finance mechanisms, strengthening the share of renewable energies in the national energy matrix and equitably expanding access to energy in rural and urban areas.
