The Mozambican public company that manages around 20 airports and aerodromes almost doubled its losses in 2024, to 1,531 million meticais (€20.8 million), according to the report and accounts consulted by Lusa on Friday.
According to the document, Aeroportos de Moçambique (AdM) had already recorded 849.5 million meticais (€11.5 million) in 2023 losses, which grew again by 80.3% in one year. In 2022, the company recorded losses of 820.5 million meticais (€11.2 million) and in 2021 an equally negative net result of 215.6 million meticais (€2.9 million).
“The year 2024 was quite challenging for the aviation sector. In the last quarter of 2024, the country was hit by a wave of violent demonstrations that culminated in the destruction of public and private infrastructure,” the report points out, highlighting that this scenario “drastically affected the sector”, given the “restrictions imposed on the mobility of people and goods in the country and the consequent cancellation of flights”.
Even so, the company states in the document, air passenger traffic grew 4.16% compared to 2023, to 2,055,435, and aircraft movement increased 1.5%, to 61,182. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, 2,296,370 passengers were transported in Mozambique in 2019, with 70,602 aircraft movements.
This growth in 2024 is explained by Aeroportos de Moçambique with the performance of the national airline LAM, which accounts for 64% of passengers and which in that year exceeded the figures for 2023, but “also the historical peak observed in 2019”.
The ADM report adds that among the airlines operating in Mozambique, Qatar Airways stood out in 2024, with a weight of 5% of the total passengers transported, “despite the post-election demonstrations that took place in the fourth quarter of the year”, in which it “managed to guarantee its regular flights” to the country.
Among regional airlines, the main highlight, according to the company, is Airlink, from South Africa, which transported 10% of all passengers in Mozambique in 2024.
The turnover of Aeroportos de Moçambique, which had 830 employees in December 2024, grew 6% that year, to 3,016 million meticais (€41 million), with 43% resulting from the collection of the Passenger Fee, according to the report and accounts.
