Mozambican singer and songwriter Assa Matusse will perform at the Mozambique-China Cultural Centre in Maputo on Friday, June 13. The show comes one year after the release of the album Mutchanga in Mozambique and features Mingas and Tabasily as special guests.
Back in the country after performing at the MTN Bushfire Festival in Eswatini, Assa Matusse is offering a show that aims to highlight elements of Mozambican culture. “I’m looking forward to going on stage and enjoying my audience, which is always welcoming and lively,” she said.
In addition to her musical activity, Assa Matusse is an ambassador for the Associação Sócio-Cultural Horizonte Azul (ASCHA), an organization that works to defend human rights, with a focus on girls, young people and women in peripheral and rural contexts. According to the organization, the concert will provide an opportunity to promote messages related to autonomy, gender equality and the fight against violence.
Assa Matusse has been establishing herself as one of the most relevant voices of the new generation of African artists, with a visual aesthetic marked by ancestral references and an artistic discourse focused on the valorization of national languages and Mozambican culture.
Matusse, whose repertoire is sung in Changana (her mother tongue), Portuguese, English and French, released her debut album +EU in 2016, followed by Mutchangana, in April 2023, the result of an artistic residency in Paris.
In 2024, Assa made her debut in Portugal during the PowerList BANTUMEN 100. At the beginning of 2025, she presented her first solo concert in Lisbon, at Musicbox, as part of the celebrations of BANTUMEN’s 10th anniversary.
