Suspected embezzlement of funds in the Quelimane Municipal Council will be investigated by the Zambézia Anti-Corruption Office. President of the Quelimane Municipal Assembly, José Manuel, yesterday visited that office to learn about the legal procedures surrounding the filing of the complaint.
The issue at stake is the alleged embezzlement of 86 million meticais. The issue was raised last week by the Renamo bench, during an ordinary session in which the accounts and last year’s activity plan of Manuel de Araújo’s administration were rejected.
José Manuel told the press that the Municipal Assembly, especially the Renamo bench, was willing to cooperate with the institutions of the administration of justice with a view to establishing the material facts, adding that the Municipal Assembly noted with concern the excessive spending by the executive.
Manuel de Araújo is reported to have explained to members of the Municipal Assembly that there was no misappropriation of funds, but rather some overlapping of expenses, and that the municipality’s administration and finance department would clarify this so as to avoid any possible misapprehension.
