The 1st Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Republic ended this Friday morning. This 10th legislature is the first to feature four political forces and the first to witness favourable votes from the opposition in the approval of “strategic” documents, such as the government’s Five-Year Program and the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget.
The session, which began on March 26, discussed just over ten matters, with an emphasis on the law approving the Political Commitment to an Inclusive National Dialogue, the 2023 General State Account, the Government’s Five-Year Program, the 2025 Economic and Social Plan and State Budget, and the National Development Strategy (2025-2044).
The Government Information and the Annual Report of the Attorney General were also discussed and approved. The law removed the responsibility of SERNIC (National Criminal Investigation Service) from the Minister of the Interior to the Attorney General and the new members of the collegiate bodies of the state were elected, in particular the members of the Council of State, the Judge Adviser of the Constitutional Council, the members of the Human Rights Commission and the National Council for Defence and Security.
In total, the Standing Commission of the Assembly of the Republic had scheduled a total of 26 matters, including the Parliament’s Activity Plan and Budget, whose plenary session never took place.
The closing ceremony took place at 9:00 a.m. and was chaired by Speaker of Parliament Margarida Adamugy Talapa. The session included speeches by the four whips of the parliamentary benches, namely Feliz Sílvia (Frelimo); Sebastião Mussanhane (Podemos), Gerónimo Malagueta (Renamo); and Fernando Bismarque (MDM).
