Mozambique Airports has announced the resumption of paid parking at Maputo International Airport from June 1st. Access has been free for several months. Before that, drivers dropping off passengers at the airport could enjoy 10 minutes access without paying.
From June 1st, users will only have three minutes of free access to drop off or pick up passengers, according to a May 20th press release from Mozambique Airports.
Users describe the new measure variously as “complicated” or “suffocating”, and are asking the company to reconsider.
“They were already only giving us 10 minutes and that wasn’t enough. With the reduction to three [minutes], it’s got worse,” says Samuel Nunes, a driver interviewed by ‘O País’ at the airport.
“It’s very tight,” said another traveller. “As you can see, I was taking my luggage out of the car, which alone took me more than three minutes.”
The Association for Consumer Studies and Defence says that the measure is unreasonable and complains that consumers were not consulted.
“The Consumer Defence Law itself stipulates the requirement that consumers must be consulted whenever a measure that affects their purses is to be taken. Consumers were not consulted,” says Alexandre Bacião from ProConsumer.
When contacted, Aeroportos de Moçambique said that three minutes is more than enough to enter, drop off and/or pick up passengers at the airport.
“Under normal conditions, there will be no need to take three minutes to drop off. It is only recommended that people be expedited during the passenger disembarkation process,” said Helder Sarmento.
The process will be free of charge, with payment only for passengers who “have to park, stop and get out of their vehicles, who must go to a parking area because they will be staying for more than three minutes, therefore, for those who are traveling or dealing with an issue at the airport and need to leave their vehicle, they must go to the parking lot”.
Parking will be charged at a rate of 25 meticais per hour and 600 meticais per day. Anyone losing their parking ticket will be liable to a fine of 500 meticais.
Passa de 10 para 3 minutos o acesso livre ao Aeroporto Internacional de Maputo. A empresa de aeroportos de Moçambique anunciou também a retoma do pagamento de estacionamento.
