The president of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, on Friday stressed the need for the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) to guarantee political “order and stability” in the country in order for it to achieve economic independence.
“In the medium term, the defence and security sector must guarantee political order and stability, so that our government has the political conditions to lay the foundations for our economic independence,” said Chapo, who as head of state is commander-in-chief of the FDS, at the end of a special operations course in Nampula province.
In the president’s words, the armed forces need to “put an end” to terrorism, kidnappings, naparamas (a paramilitary group that operates in central and northern Mozambique) “and other transnational crimes that affect the country” at the moment.
“One of the measures to achieve these goals is to ensure that military and paramilitary training institutions teach up-to-date subjects on threats to state security, because they are constantly changing,” said Chapo.
The commander-in-chief also pointed to the need to invest in training the instructors and trainers of these institutions, so that they can make adjustments to the training content.
“We also challenge all the commanders of the Defence and Security Forces to study new tactics, new techniques, procedures and combat strategies, in order to understand the metamorphosis of the new threats to peace and our national security,” he said.
On 7 April, the president called for national unity to achieve economic independence, at the start of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the country’s political independence from Portugal, which had been the colonial power.
“On the foundations of economic independence, the important thing is for each of us to do our part, in the fields, at work, in the shack, in the company, in all the places where we find ourselves, doubling our effort and dedication in our workplace and in our area of activity,” Chapo said.
The president was speaking at the launch of the national unity flame, which is to travel the length and breadth of the country until it reaches Maputo on 25 June.
