Anti-smuggling authorities in South China’s Guangdong Province recently apprehended a Red Notice fugitive involved in ivory smuggling who had fled to Mozambique eight years ago. The case is currently under further investigation.
According to a notice issued by the Zhanjiang Customs on Saturday, the anti-smuggling bureau recently apprehended a fugitive surnamed Huang, listed on Interpol’s Red Notice, who had fled to Mozambique, China News Service reported.
On July 6, 2017, the anti-smuggling bureau of Zhanjiang Customs, in collaboration with its counterpart in Fuzhou Customs in East China’s Fujian Province, successfully dismantled a criminal gang that was smuggling ivory from Africa into China.
Since the case was uncovered, Huang, a key suspect in the case, has been hiding overseas. Investigating authorities issued a Red Notice for Huang through Interpol.
Over the years, the anti-smuggling bureau of Zhanjiang Customs has persistently tracked, and eventually confirmed Huang’s exact location in Mozambique.

The anti-smuggling bureau of Zhanjiang Customs has carried out five overseas law enforcement missions to track down Red Notice fugitives involved in the case.
So far, four Red Notice fugitives have been apprehended from countries including Nigeria, Tanzania and Mozambique, demonstrating China’s zero-tolerance policy toward the smuggling of ivory and other endangered species and their products.
Zhanjiang Customs’ anti-smuggling bureau stated that it will continue to intensify case investigations, strengthen comprehensive enforcement, and contribute to protecting wildlife resources and safeguarding ecological security, Guangzhou Daily reported.
