The government has decided to start charging new toll rates at tolls booths managed by the Rede Viária de Moçambique (REVIMO) and Trans African Concessions (TRAC) , effective this Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday in Maputo, the national director of Transport and Safety, Fernando Andela, stated that the reduction in toll rates for Class 1, which includes light vehicles, goes down from the current 40 meticais to 30 meticais.
Andela explained that the government made the decision after in-depth assessments of the tolls charged to Class 1 users at TRAC toll booths, namely the Maputo toll booth on National Highway Number 4 (N4), and those of REVIMO, in this case the toll booths on the Maputo Ring Road and the Dondo toll booth on National Highway Number 6 (N6) in the central province of Sofala.
“We are holding this press conference to announce the reduction in the toll fee for Class 1 users at TRAC and REVIMO toll booths, as I mentioned. We would also like to share that, here on the Maputo Ring Road, light vehicles, which are Class 1, currently pay 40 meticais, and from tomorrow [Thursday] will pay 30 meticais,” he said.
At the Maputo toll booth, Class 1 light vehicles will also be charged 30 meticais against the previous 40 meticais. The same reduction applies to the Dondo toll booth.
“These measures are part of the government’s efforts to create conditions that will help reduce the cost of living and normalise socio-economic activity,” Andela said.
The government has instructed the managers of the concession roads to continue to engage in dialogue with toll users, publicising the new tariffs and benefits defined, as well as “addressing the concerns raised by citizens”.
The government recently announced new tolls on the Ring Road, focusing on reducing the fee charged for semi-public passenger transport from 10 to five meticais.
The cost of public passenger transport (Class 2 vehicles) is reduced from 35 to 25 meticais. The fee paid by residents living near the toll booths falls from 16 to 10 meticais and that for articulated buses from 380 to 130 meticais.
At the Maputo toll booth, the fee charged for semi-public passenger transport will also be reduced from the current 15 meticais to five meticais. The fee charged for Class 2 vehicles for public passenger transport will be reduced from the current 51 meticais to 17 meticais.
The government will introduce a discount on the fares charged for Class 3 vehicles (articulated buses) from the current 225 meticais to 130 meticais.
The toll on the Maputo-Ka Tembe bridge and connecting roads also reduces the Class 1 rate at the Ka Tembe toll from 125 meticais to 100 meticais. The rate charged to Catembe residents is also reduced from 50 meticais to 40 meticais, and to semi-public transport from the current 30 meticais to 20 meticais.
The rate is also reduced for public passenger transport (Class 2 vehicles) from the current 60 meticais to 40 meticais, and for Class 1 vehicles at the Mudissa toll, from 100 meticais to 80 meticais.
At Ponta do Ouro and Mahubo, the tolls fall from 130 to 100 meticais.
On the N6, Beira-Machipanda toll, the government has set the rate for Class 1 users at the Dondo toll at 30 meticais, down from the previous 40 meticais.
There has also been a reduction in the rate for Class 1 vehicles at the Nhamatanda (Sofala) toll from 120 to 100 meticais, and for Class 1 vehicles at the Chimoio toll from 180 to 100 meticais.
At tolls directly managed by the Roads Fund (Fundo de Estradas), a 60% discount has been introduced on the rate charged to Class 1 interprovincial transport vehicles, from 50 meticais to 20 meticais; Class 2 vehicles from 200 meticais to 80 meticais; and Class 3 vehicles from 500 meticais to 200 meticais.
There is also the introduction of a discount for inter-district transport vehicles of Class 1, from 50 meticais to 10 meticais; Class 2, from 200 meticais to 20 meticais, and a 60% discount on the normal rate for frequent users in the zone of influence of the toll of Classes 1, 2 and 3.
On the Kassuende bridge, fees charged for semi-public passenger transport fall from 80 to 50 meticais, and for public passenger transport from 350 meticais to 230 meticais.
