Informal gasoline dealers in the city of Lichinga are speculating on fuel prices due to the shortages recently recorded in Niassa, a fact that worries users, especially motorcycle taxi operators, who now pay 100 meticais for half a litre of fuel, as against the previous 50.
Given this situation, motorcycle taxi drivers are having to increase the prices they charge. According to them, they are unable to purchase the desired quantities of fuel at gas stations and resort to informal dealers, who charge them exorbitant prices.
Motorcycle taxi driver Marciano Arlindo told Notícias that he did not know the real cause of the situation in the provincial capital recently, but that it was compromising the lives of young people who depend on motorcycle taxis because the current cost of gasoline is unsustainable.
Managers of some of the busiest gas stations in Lichinga city say that the fuel crisis has only arisen since the post-election protests, and that it is now getting worse and is not only affecting Lichinga.
