The President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, expressed enthusiasm for the modern electric train line in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Thursday, considering it an inspiring example for the countries of Southern Africa. He made these statements after a visit to the Main Railway Station accompanied by First Lady, Gueta Selemane Chapo.
“It is a good impression, we believe that these are very important projects for the development of our region,” President Chapo said, highlighting the impact of the Tanzanian railway project on mobility, security and economic dynamism.
Daniel Chapo noted that the Standard Gauge railway initiative, initiated during the presidency of John Pombe Magufuli, aims to integrate the countries of the region, going beyond Tanzania’s national borders.
During the tour of the station, the head of state observed that the electric railway allows the population to travel in “perfect conditions”, highlighting aspects such as safety, speed and the reduction of road traffic. “The quality of the roads is not the same as that of an electric train, which is why we also believe that this is a very important project for the development of the country, the cities and for boosting the economy,” Chapo stated.
When asked about the possibility of Mozambique adopting a similar solution, the head of government was peremptory: “Yes, we are already working on this project.”
He said that the initiative was already public knowledge and was being followed with anticipation. “You have already heard […] that we are working at full speed to see if we can start to materialize the project,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to moving forward with modern solutions to the challenges of urban mobility.
Pragmatically, the president admitted that the project could begin with a pilot phase in the Greater Maputo region. “It may not start on a national scale right away, but at least in Greater Maputo, we will solve the transport problems in Greater Maputo,” Chapo explained. The connection between Maputo, Matola and Marracuene was identified as a priority to ease traffic congestion in the capital.
“We believe that in the first phase, the issue related to the Maputo-Matola, Maputo-Marracuene connection is quite important to relieve traffic congestion in the country’s capital, a project of this kind and of this size,” concluded the Mozambican president, highlighting the executive’s long-term vision to modernize the transport infrastructure.
Also on the same day, the President of the Republic visited the Historical Centre of African Liberation, an institution that preserves the memory of the struggles for independence on the continent.
President Chapo’s participation in this activity symbolized the strengthening of historical and political ties between Mozambique and Tanzania, on the eve of the end of his official visit to the neighbouring country.
