As part of the three-day state visit by Mozambican president Daniel Chapo to the United Republic of Tanzania at the invitation of his counterpart, Samia Hassan, Mozambican and Tanzanian businesspeople have already held a preparatory meeting on business and investment in Dar-es-Salam, the economic capital of Tanzania.
The Minister of Economy of Mozambique, Basílio Muhate, said that the business meeting aims to strengthen economic cooperation ties between the two countries.
“As you know, Mozambique has a long border with Tanzania. It is a sister country and a lot of economic activity takes place along this border. We are interested in strengthening this cross-border activity and improving trade throughout the region,” said Minister Muhate.
“We have a trade deficit in the balance of transactions with Tanzania, so we want to encourage more Mozambican businesspeople to contribute to increasing exports to this neighbouring country. The objective is to exchange views between private sector agents, between businesspeople, to improve business between Mozambique and Tanzania,” he added.
Muhate said that both countries were focused on investments in small and medium-sized companies.
“For us, what we are bringing are these investment ideas, mainly in small and medium-sized companies, from companies that are in the cross-border area, because we feel that we can still do more as governments of Mozambique and Tanzania to improve flows and thus improve our economies,” the minister explained.
He stressed that, “Mozambique and Tanzania are close countries. Mozambique is part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) free trade area, so all these aspects contribute to consolidating our economic relationship with this country, which is a brother and neighbour.”
