The Mozambican health authorities plan to launch a five-day polio vaccination campaign in the central province of Zambézia.
The campaign, which will take place from 27 to 31 May, will cover over three million children under the age of nine in the 22 districts of that province.
According to Issa Ibrahimo, head of the Extended Vaccination Programme at the Provincial Health Directorate, the campaign is aimed at eradicating polio in the country, especially in Zambezia.
“We call on parents and guardians to collaborate in the mass vaccination of children under nine years of age. The vaccination campaign will take place door-to-door in the 22 districts of the province”, he said.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) recorded over the last year 41 cases of polio since the outbreak of the disease in Mozambique was declared in 2022. As a result of the outbreak, the Health Ministry, in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), implemented nine rounds of polio vaccination campaigns.
Over the last year, under the national vaccination campaign, 23 million children under the age of 15 were vaccinated against polio.
“I’m happy that the mobile brigade is here as I didn’t have the money to travel to the hospital for the vaccines. We can walk here from our house – it is really close,” said Angela Abudo with daughter Atija Luis, after getting the #PolioVaccine in a community in #CaboDelgado. pic.twitter.com/fNtOEEoTpJ

One drop can change the future, #ForEveryChild.
The ripple effect is real – one drop, one health worker, one caregiver, one child → monumental impact!
We can #EndPolio, if we all take action. pic.twitter.com/RWbw5R7XBx
