The Public Prosecutor’s Office opened six human organ trafficking cases in 2024, compared to five in the previous year, with two resulting in indictments and four being carried over to the following year.
The figures were shared by the Attorney General of the Republic, Américo Letela, whom, during his report to parliament, expressed the institution’s concern at the registration of the cases mentioned.
Letela also said that the authorities had registered five cases of human trafficking in the city of Maputo and in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Tete, Manica and Gaza, compared to two in the same previous period, representing an increase of three cases.
“Four cases related to international human trafficking were also reported, compared to two in the same previous period, with an increase of two cases, of which three were closed, with indictments being issued in two, one being archived and three carried over to the following period,” he highlighted.
“Trafficking in persons, organs and parts of the human body are crimes that concern the Attorney General’s Office and will continue to receive special attention from this body,” Letela stressed.
“During 2024, cases of recruitment and enticement of citizens by means of information and communication technologies were reported in some situations, through misleading promises of work in large cities and abroad, predominantly for the purposes of labour and sexual exploitation,” Letela reported.
With regard to the legal framework, the need to review the Human Trafficking Law in order to provide greater harmony with the Palermo Protocol, criminal legislation and the Code of Criminal Procedure in force stands out, a proposal for which has been with the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs since 2023.
