Mozambique election unrest leaves at least 67 dead, group says
Technicians from the National Institute of Social Welfare fear going to the interior due to the instability caused by the conflict between the army and Renamo.
An attack attributed to Renamo, on Saturday September 17, against a brigade of the National Institute of Social Action (INAS) left 150 elderly without their pensions for September in Sabeta in Manica province, a zone already hit by famine and political and military conflict.
The attack was carried out on a vehicle carrying money for basic social benefits for the elderly and vulnerable in Sabeta, and prevented the team from getting to the place where the beneficiaries had gathered.
Armando Tangai, INAS delegate for north Manica, said that the attack forced the team back to district headquarters without having paid the elderly their monthly income subsidies.
“The money was not stolen, but due to the threat to their lives, the team did not get to pay the allowances,” Tangai said.
Manica police spokesperson Elsidia Filipe said that one of the INAS team was injured in the shooting.
“One of the INAS vehicle’s occupants was injured but is now out of danger,” she said, adding that government forces were working to repel Renamo military incursions in the region.
Tambara district, an area already vulnerable to drought and famine, started experiencing insecurity due to the resumption of political and military tension, with Renamo’s armed wing suspected of having recently attacked Sabeta administrative post headquarters and vandalising the hospital and the home of the local leader.
